Trump accepts to begin the US presidential transition to Biden

Donald Trump has agreed to begin the official transition to the United States of President-elect Joe Biden to take office.

The president said the federal agency overseeing the handover must "do what needs to be done", even as he pledged to continue challenging his electoral defeat.

The General Services Administration (GSA) said it recognizes Biden as "the clear winner."

It came just as Biden's win in Michigan was officially approved, which dealt a huge blow to Trump.

The GSA announcement means that the president-elect now has access to key security briefings, office space, and government officials as he prepares to take office on January 20.

Its transition website has now changed to a US government domain. He'll start announcing the people he wants in the top positions in his government on Tuesday.

How did the Biden team respond?

He welcomed the start of the transition process with the Democratic President-elect taking the oath of office on January 20.

"Today's decision is a necessary step to begin addressing the challenges facing our nation, including controlling the epidemic and getting our economy back on track," a statement by the team said.

Earlier, Biden unveiled his nominations for the Foreign Policy and National Security Team, made up of old colleagues from his years in the Obama administration.

Anthony Blinken is set to appoint Secretary of State and John Kerry as climate envoy, while Janet Yellen is expected to be the first US Treasury Secretary.
