Amy Connie Barrett: Trump is nominating the favorite conservatives for the Supreme Court

US President Donald Trump has nominated Amy Connie Barrett, a favorite of social conservatives, to be the new judge on the US Supreme Court.

Speaking next to her in the Rose Garden of the White House, Mr. Trump described her as "a woman of unparalleled achievement."

If confirmed by the senators, Judge Barrett would replace Liberal Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who recently passed away at the age of 87.

And the nomination will spark a bitter confirmation battle in the Senate as the presidential elections approach in November.

After Judge Barrett announced his candidacy on Saturday, President Trump described her as a "brilliant scholar and judge" with "unyielding loyalty to the Constitution."

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden urged the Senate "not to act in this vacant position until after the American people choose their next president and the next Congress."

"The Constitution of the United States is designed to give voters one chance to be heard about who serves on court. It is now time and their voice must be heard," he said.

If Judge Barrett is affirmed, the conservative judges would have a 6-3 majority on the highest court in the United States for the foreseeable future.

The 48-year-old will be the third judge appointed by the incumbent Republican president, after Neil Gorsuch in 2017 and Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.
