Brasilia:

The Brazilian government announced Wednesday that it is negotiating the purchase of 30 million doses of a vaccine for the Corona virus from Russia and India, after regulators made it easier for treatments to win emergency use licenses.

So far, only the dose of AstraZeneca / Oxford and Chinese CoronaVac has been allowed in Brazil, the second worst-hit country after the United States, with more than 226,000 deaths from Covid-19.

The Brazilian Health Monitoring Agency said it would no longer require final phase III trials to be conducted in Brazil, paving the way to obtain emergency clearance for vaccinations.

The Health Ministry said it would meet with representatives from Russia and India on Friday to finalize the details of the deal, which will see about 18 million doses be delivered this month and another 12 million doses in March.

The move comes after the medical journal The Lancet published results this week showing that Sputnik V - named after the Soviet-era satellite - is 91.6 per cent safe and effective, allaying concerns about transparency.

Brazil began vaccinating January 17, starting with medical workers, indigenous people and the elderly.

Brazil has a population of 212 million, and it has suffered an average of 1,062 deaths and 50,000 cases per day in the past week.
