The company said US President Donald Trump has been permanently suspended from Twitter "due to the risk of further incitement to violence."
Twitter said the decision was taken "after carefully reviewing recent tweets from the realDonaldTrump account."
This comes amid a purge by major tech companies of the internet platforms used by Trump and his supporters.
Some lawmakers and celebrities have been calling for years on Twitter to ban Mr Trump completely.
Former first lady Michelle Obama tweeted on Thursday, saying that the Silicon Valley giants should stop enabling Trump's "brutal behavior" and permanently expel him.
Why was Trump banned?
Trump's account was closed for 12 hours on Wednesday after he described people who stormed the US Capitol as "patriots."
Hundreds of his supporters entered the compound as the US Congress tried to confirm Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election. The ensuing violence resulted in the deaths of four civilians and one police officer.
Twitter warned at the time that it would "permanently" ban Trump if he violates the platform's rules again.
After he was allowed to return to Twitter, Trump posted two tweets on Friday that the company mentioned as the last straw.
Twitter stated that these tweets "violate the glorification of violence policy."
