Turkey Starts Using China's COVID-19 Vaccine After Good Results

 

Health Minister Fakhruddin Kuja said that in the coming days, Ankara will also sign an agreement with Pfizer for 4.5 million doses, with the option to buy another 30 million from the pharmaceutical giant.

Health Minister Fakhruddin Kuja said on Thursday that Turkey will receive the first shipment of the Sinovac Chinese coronavirus vaccine in a few days, as initial local tests showed it to be 91% effective.

In the coming days, Koca said, Ankara will also sign a deal with Pfizer / BioNTech for 4.5 million doses, with the option to buy another 30 million from the US pharmaceutical giant and its German partner.

Turkey will initially receive 3 million doses of Sinovac and will have the option of receiving another 50 million doses when it begins vaccinating next month, starting with healthcare workers and the most vulnerable.

Koca said the first shipments of the Chinese vaccine will be shipped to Turkey on Sunday.

Initial tests on 7,371 volunteers in Turkey showed the Chinese vaccine to be 91.25 percent effective, although phase III trials had not yet been completed.

The country of 83 million people has officially recorded 19,115 deaths from COVID-19 and 2.2 million cases of the virus.
