Hindu widows receive a share of husbands' property: the Bangladesh court

The Bangladesh High Court ruled on Wednesday that agricultural and non-agricultural land should not be separated.

Dhaka:

For the first time, Hindu widows in Bangladesh will be enjoying their rights to agricultural and non-agricultural land for their deceased husbands after a higher court ruled in their favor, according to a media report.

The Bangladesh High Court ruled on Wednesday that agricultural and non-agricultural land should not be separated. The Daily Star reported that widows have a right to their husbands' lands.

Under the current rule, Hindu widows in the country are only entitled to their husbands' housing and not any other assets such as agricultural land.

"Hindu widows will have the right to both agricultural and non-agricultural land owned by their husbands. They will also have the right to sell land for legal necessities during their lifetimes," the report said, citing the court order.

The ruling by the Supreme Court came on the heels of a civil review petition filed by civil Jyotindranath Mondal of Khulna District challenging the judgment of a lower court.

On March 7, 2004, the Joint District Judge in Khulna ruled in a case brought by Geotendranath, saying that Gauri Dasi, widow of Jyotendranath's elder brother Avimano Mondal, would acquire the right to agricultural land for her late husband.
