A study discovers first case of re-infection with coronavirus in the United States

The report, posted online, describes a 25-year-old man living in Reno, Nevada, who tested positive for the virus in April after developing a mild illness. He fell ill again in late May and developed into a more severe case of COVID-19.

Researchers have identified for the first time a person in the United States who had been reinfected with the new coronavirus, according to a study that has not yet been reviewed by outside experts.

The report, posted online, describes a 25-year-old man living in Reno, Nevada, who tested positive for the virus in April after developing a mild illness.

He fell ill again in late May and developed into more severe COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

Presumed re-infections have appeared in other parts of the world, but questions have emerged about the accuracy of the test. Earlier this week, researchers from the University of Hong Kong reported details of a 33-year-old man who in April recovered from a serious case of COVID-19 and was diagnosed four months later with a different strain of the virus.

Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and the Nevada Public Health Laboratory said they were able to prove through complex tests that the virus associated with each case of Renault man's infection represents genetically different strains.
